On 16 May, Museum Night will take place, during which hundreds of museums and memory institutions across Estonia will open their doors. We also look forward to welcoming visitors to the University of Tartu Computer Museum that evening.
The Computer Museum is located in Tartu, in the Delta Study Building (room 1039). Visitors are welcome from 18:00 to 23:00. Admission is free, but those who wish may support the museum with a cash donation. The full Museum Night programme (in Estonian) can be found here.
During the evening, visitors can join guided tours introducing the Delta building, starting at 18:00, 18:30, 19:00, 19:30, and 20:00 from the first-floor lobby. Tours are conducted in Estonian.
This year’s Museum Night theme is “Voices of the Night”. Accordingly, visitors will have the opportunity to hear a computer speak Estonian in different voices.
At the Computer Museum, you can explore the history of computing. The exhibition takes you on a journey from the first electronic computer Ural, dating back to 1959, to the digital e-state we are familiar with today.
The museum features several rare items, such as the nameplate of the Ural computer and its components. Visitors can also see a Soviet-era mainframe console, the Juku personal computer produced in Estonia, and other computers that were in use in Estonia at the time.
The exhibition also includes several older Apple devices, as well as a supercomputer that was once ranked among the 500 most powerful computers in the world.
We kindly invite individuals and organisations to donate computing equipment to help expand the museum’s collection. We are currently preparing an exhibition on the evolution of mobile phones, and anyone is welcome to bring their old, well-preserved mobile phone to the museum.
